Ancient gold cartouches unearthed in Egypt

A team of French and Egyptian archeologists have discovered two sets of nine solid gold cartouches bearing the name of Thutmosis III and queen Hatchepsut. They have been found near Hatshepsut's obelisk in the temple of Karnak which proves that the obelisk was erected by both rulers.

 Nouvelles de KV63 - News from KV63

The site on KV63 is regularly updated. Now we can see a photograph of coffin of a youth (labelled G), with under its head a coffin of a very small baby (labelled D). But the content of the sarcophagi and jars is still very disappointing.

 Treasure from Tell el-Farkha

the Polish archaeological expedition at Tell el-Farkha has made two discoveries in 2006. The first one was a deposit hidden inside a small pottery jar. The deposit is composed of 60 items, mainly hippopotamus ivory figurines (humans, animals, models of boats, game pieces), miniature stone and faience vases. The deposit is dated from the beginning of the 1st dynasty. The closest analogies known for the figurines from the deposit are those found in the main deposit at Hierakonpolis.
The second discovery is of fragments of golden foil, which previously covered probably 2 wooden statues (unfortunately the wood is not preserved). The larger of the statues was about 65 -70 cm high, while the smaller one reached about 35-40 cm in height. Both represented standing, naked men. The eyes of both statues were inlaid with lapis-lazuli stone. The objects are in a very poor condition and numerous fragments are missing. They were found in a Naqada III B context.

Das Grab des Hohenpriesters Neb-wenenef in Dra’ Abu el-Naga (Grab Nr. TT 157)

The universities of Heidelberg-Leipzig and the university of Pennsylvania are working together to restore one of the biggest tombs on the west side of Luxor, located at Dra abu elNaga, close to Deir el Bahari. The tomb bears the number TT157 and the owner is a Nebuenef who was Great Priest of Amun under Ramesses II. The article is very interesting, and is illustrated by plans and photographs. The whole thing can also be downloaded as a pdf file.

Well, this is not really Ancient Egypt history, but this find is important enough to provide a good link. This is a preliminary transcription of the Coptic text.

 Unusual Ancient Egyptian Pillow Analyzed

Most ancient Egyptian pillows were rather uncomfortable looking headrests carved out of wood, ivory and stone, but scientists have just analyzed a 4,000 year-old Egyptian pillow made out of woven plant fibers that were encased in a wax coating. Archaeological artefacts are irreplaceable information resources. Consequently analytical methods must be non-destructive or use the minimum of sample so that an artefact remains accessible and unchanged for future research. The significance and innovation of the current study is the application of micro- and non-destructive analytical methods to an ancient Egyptian pillow in order to gain new knowledge about funerary customs, population composition, trade routes, and technological expertise. In this study, the analytical results highlight the funerary customs of a migrant community within ancient Egypt with an ephemeral technological expertise.

Fatwa against statues triggers uproar in Egypt

/Source :

EEF NEWS

A fatwa issued by Egypt's top religious authority, which forbids the display of statues, has art-lovers fearing that it could be used by Islamic extremists as an excuse to destroy Egypt's historical heritage. Egypt's Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, the country's top Islamic jurist, issued the religious edict that declared as un-Islamic the exhibition of statues in homes, basing the decision on texts in the Hadith (sayings of the prophet). Remember the Afghan Buddhas? Don't think this could not happen in Egypt.

The Djehuty project is still alive, and well, and discoveries are still being made. For the recent ones, see

, then follow the link to Tesoros funerarios del Antiguo Egipto.
Pr. Galan, the chief archeologist, said that the vessels' lids, which bear the likenesses of human faces, are "unique in the world" for their age and for the archaeological context in which they were discovered. The team also discovered a collection of marble pieces for the game, known as "senet".
Another highlight, Galan said, was finding the "exceptional" entrance to the vestibule of the tomb of Djehuty. He estimated that his team will need "at least another 10 years" to complete the excavation of the Dra' Abu el-Naga necropolis at Luxor, as the mountainside contains "a street on which the tombs come one after the other like homes in a housing development".

Palace of Homer's hero rises out of the myths

Greek archaeologists have unearthed the remains of an ancient palace associated with Ajax the Great, a legendary warrior-king cited by Homer as a key participant in the Trojan War, the senior archaeologist supervising the project said Monday. Dating from the 13th century BC, the Mycenaean-era palace found on the small island of Salamis, west of Athens, is part of a four-level complex extending over 750 square metres. Among the discoveries were part of a Cyprus-made bronze talent, an ancient heavy unit of coinage, and a rare piece of armour stamped with the royal mark of Ramesses II the Great. See left. The cartouche of the pharaoh is difficult to see. Enlarge the view, I have circled it in red.

 Tauseret temple project

The unfinished Memorial Temple of Tausert is located on the west bank at Luxor between the recently restored Temple of Merenptah and the small Temple of Khonsuirdis, south of the Ramesseum. The site was briefly examined by W.M. Flinders Petrie in 1861. For the past 100 years, the site has been largely ignored because the temple was never completed in antiquity, there are no walls standing above the ground surface to attract any attention, and it has been presumed that Petrie’s examination of the site was thorough. This article describes what has been accomplished during the first two seasons of work on this long-overlooked yet fascinating site.

 Aigyptos

The AIGYPTOS database was specifically created to enable the search for Egyptological publications by means of elaborate subject indexing. It was developed at the Institute of Egyptology in Munich, Germany, and was available only locally for a number of years - therefore the language used for processing literature was German. An additional English version of AIGYPTOS is now available. Its specific aim is to allow queries using English keywords. Due to the limited time that was available for the creation of the English version, it has not been possible to translate the contents of all the searchfields into English, so that the entries in several fields, e.g. "place of publication", "language", "comment" et al. are still in German.

 Ptolemaic Temple Texts

/ Source :

EEF NEWS

The goal of the "Leuven Online Index of Ptolemaic and Roman Hieroglyphic Texts" is to translate in the following years as much hieroglyphic text dating back to the Greek and Roman period as possible.

Egypt thwarts plot to attack tourist areas

Egyptology blog

If you have planned a journey in Egypt, this may be of interest to you...
The Egyptian government said on Wednesday that it had broken up a group of at least 22 militant Islamists planning bomb attacks on tourists, a gas pipeline near Cairo, and Muslim and Christian leaders. The group was financing itself through donations and alms collected at mosques. The ministry said: Among its plans were attacks on what the group called "deviant young men in tourists areas."...
And don't forget the human cases of Avian flue... and all these chickens running around everywhere.
