Découverte d'une nouvelle tombe dans la Vallée des Rois: KV64KV 64, the new tomb found in the Valley of the Kings

Of course, this is THE news of the month: a new tomb has been discovered in the Valley of the Kings and has been identified by the number KV64.
The discovery was actually made one year ago, very precisely January 25th, 2011, by the Switzerland mission of the university of Basel, controlled by Mrs. Elina Paulin-Grothe, attended of Mrs. Susanne Bikel. Because this structure is so close to KV40 (2 metres) and as it was impossible to know whether it was just a short unfinished shaft or a real tomb, it was given the temporary number 40b. This number has now been replaced with the final designated one of KV64. Due to the political context at the time, an iron door was immediately placed on top of the opening, and the news was kept secret until now.

It represents a small tomb, which knew two successive owners, one of the XVIIIth Dynasty (15th century B.C.), the other of the XXIIth (9th century B.C.). The shaft is 2.50m deep, measuring approx. 1.10 x 1.60m, giving access, via a lateral opening, to a unique chamber of 4 x 2.4m, crudely cut and uninscribed, filled with debris to about 0.80m from the ceiling. A large coffin in black wood, inscribed with large yellow hieroglyphs, was in the north corner, as well as a small wooden stela with very bright colours; the two artifacts are of the XXIIth Dynasty.
The stela and coffin belong to a woman with the name of Nehemes-Bastet (see Zeit) who carried the title of chantress of Amon (it should be remembered that this is essentially about an honorary title), and that she was the daughter of a priest of Amon.
Diverse fragments indicate that the area under them, which still requires clearing, is another layer dating from the XVIIIth dynasty.
Naturally the buzz got under way to know more about the character, and her possible relations with the royal family. In a hypothesis where she would not have any connection, we would be in presence of the only tomb of a non-royal woman in the whole valley.
The coffin was opened, in the presence of Egyptian authority, and it contained the intact mummy of the lady, who measured about 1.55m ("carefully wrapped", said Mrs. Bickel).
More will probably be known in the weeks or months to come.

Why scarab beetles dance on a ball of dung

The extraordinary role which the Egyptians attributed to to the scarab beetle in the solar future is well known: the bug pushes in front of him a ball of dung which serves as a reserve of food and place for laying eggs: for the ancients to see the small beetles coming out of this dark ball was a major symbol of rebirth, and the creature took on the position which one knows.
Furthermore, the scarab goes on top of the ball of dung and seems to dance before pushing it in front of him. It is not a matter of a dance to the sun, but about orientating itself in order to turn or walk in a straight line.
It is unknown if the ancients had made this observation, but it would not have stopped the reinforcement of their convictions: the scarab never deviates from its path leading to the early solar rebirth.

 Heritage at what cost?

Al Ahram published a long interview with the new minister of antiquities, Mohammed Ibrahim. Here was discovered his career, and interestingly, for French-speaking people, was the fact that he earned a diploma and doctorate in Egyptology from Lyons University. He speaks French very well.
To achieve his objectives, he came up against the major problem of the lack of money: the SCA - of which he didn't define the place again in his new organisation chart - is very indebted and the tourists, the unique source of income, are sorely lacking since the revolution. Thus, they will pay much more to the visit the monuments: It is understood that it will be 100LE for a foreigner for each of the monument (against 1LE for an Egyptian) but it is not very clear. Besides, he intends to make foreign missions contribute more, in particular by asking them for a bigger coverage of young Egyptian Egyptologists.

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS TO BE HELD IN ALEXANDRIA IN 2013

Last year, the changes in Egypt made it impossible for the Egyptian organisers to continue their plans for the International Congress of Egyptologists, which had been scheduled for September 2012 in Cairo. The next Congress will be held at the Calligraphy Centre in Alexandria, under the direction of Ahmed Mansour, Deputy Director of the Centre. The schedule has been set preliminarily for Friday, September 13, to Friday, September 20.

Failed treasury auction portends Egyptian disaster

/ Source : Jan Bailey, EEF

This is not strictly speaking about an Egyptological article, but an excellent summary of the present situation of Egypt, which corroborates information provided there by the people. A disaster is taking place under our impotent eyes. The economic situation of the country is so bad that, very soon, it won't be able to pay anymore for its imports of food, however 50% of that which the Egyptians eat, and notably wheat, is imported.
With the hunger, the true revolution is going to begin. If one adds 3/4 of Islamists in the assembly and an elevated illiteracy rate, everything seems in place for a return of obscurantism (a policy of withholding information from the public). Let us hope that the giants of Memnon won't be the next Buddhas of Bamiyan.

Foodstuff placement in ibis mummies and the role of viscera in embalming

Recent excavation of a mummified ibis, in whose bill were found numerous snails, and the 2010 radiological study of ibis mummies from Yale's Peabody Museum drew attention to the presence of bird foodstuffs intentionally placed inside mummified ibises following evisceration. The foodstuff packing in the Peabody's ibises was likely contained within the birds' own viscera. Radiographs of a hatchling ibis mummy at McGill's Redpath Museum demonstrated similar placement of foodstuffs within the eviscerated body cavity. This pattern of ibis evisceration, with the previously unreported practice of foodstuff packing, suggests the provision of an afterlife food source to the bird. These findings lend support to the idea that the viscera of ibises, and humans alike, were meant to continue their living function in the afterlife. Given that organs of digestion and respiration were specifically preserved and retained within, or in conjunction with, human mummies, the implication is that animals were also treated with similar respect and care, and the crucial role of the viscera was recognised.

An interview with Pierre Tallet (University of the Sorbonne, Paris) on the very important role of the treasurers in the administration of Ancient Egypt. This character is sometimes called "the director of the double house of silver" or, to the Middle Kingdom, "director of sealed things". As a man of power, he was at the head of a large administration. His role was to make it sure that the means don't miss, so that the Pharaoh's will can be executed. He also has another unexpected role: it is his responsibility for the organisation of the distant expeditions, in particular towards quarries.
